HOLISTIC EDUCATION AT
ELEMENTARY SCHOOL THOMAS JEFFERSON
Elementary school provides a personalized education visualizing children as persons, as integrated human beings. Our main goal is to have children develop the abilities they need to become leaders and as valuable people guided towards happiness and success.
We have developed our programs based on the competencies they need to acquire in order to be prepared for the future. We are aware that our children will be facing a very competitive world. Therefore, besides academic excellence, we work with emotional intelligence in order to prepare children to know, manage, and express their feelings, as well as to interact socially, to have self control, and tolerate frustration adequately.
Leadership is another ability we work with. We teach children problem solving and decision making, as well as the ability to guide others to reach common goals and success. These abilities also reinforce team work. The programs “Steps to Respect” and “Second Step” are used to provide all these competencies. Both programs are geared towards reaching a healthy self concept and to promote values like respect, unity, partnership, and dignity. Our main focus is on giving children the sense of being unique and special. For the little ones we have three very special programs: “Why am I Unique”, “Star Chair” and “Student of the Week”, which provide kids with the feeling that they are special, and promote a healthy self esteem, as well as recognition and tolerance to their differences, in an environment of empathy and respect. The programs also help children develop the ability of public speech and to communicate with others in an assertive way. They value all they are, and all they do, and learn to accept themselves in an accurate and healthy way.
Human Development is another program for the older kids. It is designed to reinforce thinking skills through study techniques and math skills, and the strengthening of their emotional intelligence. The ultimate being worked through social and emotional skills. We also pursue to promote self knowledge through sexuality workshops included in this program.
In the class room, academic weekly programs and teachers’ activities are planned and designed to reinforce the six edges of abilities that elementary works with: Emotional intelligence, team work, leadership, communication skills, thinking skills and creativity. Daily activities are also planned to use all the learning styles in order to help children achieve a balanced development on visual, auditory and kinesthetic learning channels. This helps children to begin developing multiple intelligences and to promote those that will be predominant when they reach adolescence and adulthood. All these activities are checked by academic coordinators and elementary school psychologists. We offer continuous guidance to teachers to help them accomplish this educational scheme.
Another area in which we work strongly at elementary school is the personalized knowledge of each and every child through continuous psychological evaluations that let us meet with their cognitive and intellectual growth; their maturity process; and their emotional status on the personal, social, and family level. This knowledge allows us to detect their personal needs and their strengths and weaknesses. It gives us a very powerful tool to work through the years of elementary school in the development of the skills they need to enter the next educational and psychological stage.
We also test our children annually by a socio – gram that lets us know how groups are integrated and how the kid perceives himself and the rest of the group according to the relationships among all students in that particular group. A learning style analysis is also applied to every student each year. All the information we come up with is given to the teachers so they can use it in planning and working with the groups.
All these evaluations are also used to provide information and assessment to parents and teachers. We are continuously giving personalized support to children and their families and guiding teachers to achieve better results with every child. This support is reinforced with a program called “Family School” through which we present conferences and various workshops to parents so they can learn how to become better educators. We carry out a thorough investigation in order to decide what kind of subjects are going to be included in the program. We do this taking into consideration their needs, the stage parents and kids are at, the type of family, etc.
Every year we are worried about the teachers’ growth and development as educators. We present them with excellent, studied, and tested courses and workshops. These courses mostly support emotional development in children and pursue their cognitive growth as well.
For elementary school, the most important thing is to maintain our community united including parents, teachers, and children in every program we implement. We are always willing to integrate and keep these three pillars of our community united. Not only is our children’s education given in a holistic way, but the way Thomas Jefferson Family is viewed: as a whole which is “much more than the addition of its parts”.
