Baby Think It Over

The part of the brain that develops last is the frontal lobe, which is responsible for impulse control and judgment. When this is combined with the hormonal changes of adolescence, sexuality takes on a significant role, and teenagers may make impulsive decisions. This is why sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancies are so common among adolescents. Despite living in an era where sexuality is no longer taboo, teenagers often turn to sources that are inaccurate. It is very important for us to foster knowledge and awareness in our young people about the implications of having an active sex life, but above all, to encourage them to develop a life plan.

In ninth grade, we conduct a project called "Baby Think it Over," which allows students to care for a robotic baby. They must identify if the baby needs feeding, diaper changes, cuddling, burping, temperature adjustments, head support, and other things, so they can experience firsthand the implications of parenthood. It's a comprehensive project because, in addition to taking the baby home and participating in this simulation, they must research the care a mother needs during pregnancy, the costs of raising a baby during the first six months of life, the pediatric care required for at least the first year, interview parents, and consider what would happen if they or their partner were pregnant, or what would happen to their studies. It's an important process of introspection, as it helps them understand the responsibilities and commitments involved in adult life and begin to see the importance of a life plan.
